Taking a chance on the unknown is one of the most courageous things we can do. I was reminded of this recently while helping my niece move to college in Honolulu. She was doing more than changing her address. My niece was embarking on a journey of independence, self-discovery, and adventure. She took a big, bold step thousands of miles into a new life.
Her courageous jump into independence mirrors the journey I see in so many of my clients. Whether they’re stepping into their first leadership role, starting a new business, or moving thousands of miles from home, the leap is always the same. One part excitement, one part fear, and entirely about creating a new vision for you who are becoming. Growth begins when we’re willing to trade certainty for possibility. It’s a courageous step toward something we can’t quite see, but just feels right (and, let’s face it, maybe a little scary – and that’s okay). At one point or another, we all make big, bold moves. When we do, we’re imagining what is possible, and then doing something about it.
In my own journey, I stepped away from a 35-year media career to become an executive leadership coach. Through this transition, I learned that courage isn’t about having all the answers. Courage is about moving forward anyway, trusting that you will figure it out as you go. And it’s about being bold enough to light the spark in the first place.
